Southside Network Authority Key Player in the RVA757 Global Internet Hub Strategy

SNA - Spotlight Posted on November 22, 2016

RVA757 is advocating making the I-64 corridor the world’s next Global Internet Hub (GIH). A GIH is a physical infrastructure that facilitates the exchange of internet traffic between multiple networks, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other entities. GIHs also have robust connectivity landing points including both subsea and terrestrial networks as well as data centers. The Virginia Beach subsea cables are a key element to this strategy. A regional GIH will drive future economic prosperity for the region as it provides a world-class digital interconnection point for businesses, biomedical, research, etc.. The SNA regional connectivity ring will be a key part of this regional technology ecosystem.

Most recently, Steven DeBerry, SNA Executive Director, and Peter Wallace, CIO, City of Virginia Beach provided a brief to the Richmond area CIOs on January 25, 2024. The purpose of the presentation was to provide a brief history of the SNA journey including the various strategies used in deciding on funding, constructing, and maintaining the SNA fiber ring. The Richmond area does not have a municipal regional ring currently, but there is interest in the success of the SNA project.
